Neymar scored the fifth and final penalty to hand Brazil Olympic Gold after Nils Petersen missed for Germany.

The game began with Neymar bagging a superb free-kick, which curled into the top corner and left Germany goalkeeper Timo Horn with no chance.

With that effort Brazil deservedly led, but in the second half, Max Meyer fired in a superb leveller to bring the Germans back into the game and the two sides could not be separated until penalties.

Aisha Buhari Sues Fayose

President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha, has sued Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State for claiming that she was involved in the Halliburton corruption scandal.

Mr. Fayose had in June said Mrs. Buhari was the “Aisha Buhari” named in a U.S. court document, alleged to have been involved in a bribery case involving a convicted former U.S. lawmaker, Williams Jefferson.

The governor, in what appeared to be an error, referred to the scandal as the Halliburton corruption case. The Halliburton case is different from the Williams Jefferson scandal.

But Mr. Fayose insisted he was right despite Mrs. Buhari’s denial and threat of legal action,
The court summons, dated July 20, 2016, was exclusively made available to PREMIUM TIMES.
As governor, Mr. Fayose has constitutional immunity against criminal prosecution.
More details coming.

"I Am Pro-Biafra" – Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has, again, explained his support for Biafran agitators.
Soyinka said the Igbo people have been so wronged that they have no choice than to consider opting out of Nigeria.

Prof. Soyinka spoke on Al Jazeera, yesterday where he shed light on his support for Biafra agitators.

“I am very much pro- Biafra because I recognise that the Igbo have been wronged desperately.
“They have been brutalised in a way that justifies their feeling that they were not part of the nation.
“Let me also say this, Biafrans are not entirely innocent in this affair. They were not, but the unleashing of such venom, such devastation on them as a people, was sufficient to justify their decision not to be part of the nation.
“I was pro-Biafran in the sense that I felt that they needed justice.”

Soyinka denied he was a troublemaker, especially in the Biafran crisis, but added, “I grew up in certain circumstances being very conscious politically, in this very Abeokuta; my mother was involved in the politics, my aunt, Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome Kuti was a leader…
“I grew up among political arguments on issues that concern humanity and I find that basically gravitated towards recognising the basic worth of human beings.
“Something I disagree when they call me a patriot because I don’t agitate on some certain entity called a nation; I agitate on humanity.”
He criticised the removal of History and teaching of the Biafran crisis in schools.
“Officials do not want to confront their own history, especially the history in the making of which they feel uncomfortable but, if you do not confront your past, you are going to mess up your future.”
On Boko Haram and the breakup of Nigeria, he said ironically, Boko Haram might be part of the reasons Nigeria may stay together.
Soyinka said a few years ago, he would have agreed that Nigeria would break, but, now that a section of the country is in trouble, there is some kind of pulling together. He added that the conscience of many Nigerian has been awakened such that they cannot abandon that section of the country.
He urged Nigerians to recognise the plurality of Nigeria, how it came together and begin to devise and adopt a method of governance which cannot only be of massive decentralisation. “That way, we can stay together. If we continue to have a centralist government, then, Nigeria is on the brink.”

NEW MILITANT GROUP EMERGES IN IMO STATE

Slightly more than one week after Imo legislators condemned the exclusion of the state from the Federal Government proposed dialogue with oil producing states in the Niger Delta region, in its bid to quell the armed hostilities in the region, a new militant group has emerged in the state.

The new group, Niger Delta Red Squad, which had claimed responsibility for the blowing up of two pipelines belonging to Shell in the Asa/Awarra axis of Ohaji Egbema Council Area, has also threatened to attack major oil pipelines in Oguta Council Area and ultimately shutdown all oil wells in the state.

The group, which was announced through a Facebook update, claimed it had what it takes to carry out the threat, warning that until the oil producing areas in the state are giving what rightfully belongs to them, the area will no longer be peaceful for oil companies to operate.

An ex-militants from the area confirmed the existence of the group but quickly added that he was not involved in the renewed militancy.

FG Scraps Post UME

The federal government yesterday announced the cancellation of the post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) into the nation’s institutions of higher learning.
Post UTME is usually conducted by universities for candidates after they have passed the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations.
Making the pronouncement yesterday in Abuja to declare open the 2016 combined policy meeting on admission to universities, polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria, the Minister of Education , Malam Adamu Adamu, said the federal government has confidence in the examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, adding that there is no need for other examinations to be conducted by universities after JAMB exams.

He said, “As far as I am concerned, the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB, let them bring it and then we address it.”
Adamu maintained that since JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests, there’s no need for tertiary institutions to conduct test again for students to gain admission.

The minister also asked the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board to stop extra charges on several categories of changes on admissions such as the change of course, change of school and others.
Meanwhile, delegates from different higher institutions across the country who converged on Abuja yesterday at the Combined Policy meeting, rounded off their debate over the cut off marks for Year 2016 Admissions into the tertiary institutions, with a cut-off point at 180.
However, the delegates maintained that the schools should not rule out screening of candidates ,that screening of is still vital to gaining entrance into the universities.
They argued that in the quest for knowledge, educational standard should not be lowered in the country.

Speaking with journalists, the JAMB Registrar, Prof ‘Dibu Ojerinde, said, “180 is given and no institution will go below 180 this year, And some universities can go above it, I know Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife will not go below 200 and University of Lagos will not go below 200 and also University of Ibadan. All these ones stand. But 180 is a bench mark for others.”

He said this year, the examination board have more than enough candidates with over 1.5 million candidate, saying, “So we will get enough candidates to take in all the schools if they are serious”

The JAMB registrar said re- distribution is already ongoing because it is embedded in the registration procedure.

He reiterated the minister of Education’s pronouncement saying, “for post UTME ,no more writing of post UTME anymore but institutions will screen their candidates.

However, touts protested at the venue of the 2016 Combined Policy meeting on Thursday.
They c

arried placards with various inscriptions, some of which called on the federal government, National Assembly and other major stakeholders to put an end to the conduct of the post UTME exams.
Some also called on the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the ICPC to probe university utilisation of the post UTME.

President Buhari: Tell Me If I Should Change Ministers

President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday that Nigerians should pass a verdict on the performance of his appointed officials during the administration’s first year in office so that he will know if he should change them. Asked if Nigerians should expect changes in his team during this anniversary period Buhari said, “I am waiting for the newspapers to tell me the performance of my ministers and whether I should make changes.”

President Buhari explained why his government took off rather slowly. He said former President Obasanjo, who had experience with hand over and take over, recalled that in 1999 outgoing Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar made each ministry to prepare handing over notes and then brief the president-elect, for him to choose what he wanted out of it. He said President Goodluck Jonathan agreed to do the same and asked all his ministers to prepare handing over notes and brief Buhari but they protested at the last minute that Buhari should not be allowed to take over the government before he was sworn-in.

As a result, he said no proper transition took place and after his inauguration he had to take briefings from two ministries a day in order to make up for lost time.

The president also spoke about budget padding. He said though he had been in public life since 1975, he never heard of budget padding until when he saw Minister of Health Prof Isaac Adeoye on television defending his budget before a National Assembly committee.

Buhari said he was shocked when the minister told the committee that he could not defend what he did not propose because the budget had been padded.

He said, “I went [to the National Assembly] and bowed and delivered [the budget] but I did not know that what I delivered was a shell. They removed what they wanted and added other things.” He said when the budget as passed by the National Assembly was brought to him, he refused to sign it because throughout his life he never signed anything that he did not understand.

At one point, he said, Minister of Budget and National Planning Udoma Udo Udoma persuaded him to sign it and he said “I will sign it because I trust you.”

However, he said before he could sign, Udoma read the budget thoroughly and rushed back to him and advised him not to sign it unless amendments were made.

Nobody Can Arrest Jonathan, Ijaw Youths Tell Buhari

Ovie Okpare, Warri

The Ijaw Youths Congress on Thursday warned the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government not to contemplate arresting former President Goodluck Jonathan over the ongoing probe of massive fraud and embezzlement alleged to have taken place under his administration.

The youths, who converged at the Wellington Hotel Effurrun, Delta State, for the 2016 annual Major Isaac Boro anniversary celebration with the theme, “The ideals of Adaka Boro and the renewed militancy in the Niger Delta: The way forward,” criticised the present administration for limiting its anti-corruption campaign only to the Jonathan regime.

The IYC president, Udengs Eradiri, urged the APC-led Federal Government to probe the Halliburton bribery case under ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, if it wanted Nigerians to take its anti-corruption campaign seriously.

On the renewed militancy in the region, Udengs, said the opening of the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State, for academic activities was the first condition for a roundtable discussion with the Federal Government towards ending ongoing militants’ onslaught in the region.

Eradiri said, “People have started discussing. There was a meeting in Abuja yesterday (Wednesday) but I told them that such a meeting would not work.

“If they want us to talk, they must first open the Maritime University and start admitting students, then we would now sit and talk. The same issues for which Adaka Boro and Ken Saro-Wiwa were killed are the same issues the Avengers are raising.

“There are no Avengers anywhere. Settle these issues and the avengers would fizzle away.”

Prominent rights activist, Tony Uranta, who also spoke at the occasion said, “Isaac Boro and Ken Saro-Wiwa died fighting for the emancipation of the Niger Delta, later we had Asari Dokubo, Tompolo and others. But because Tompolo was taken out, new faces have come up.”

Uranta called on Buhari to reassure Niger Delta youths that the amnesty programme would not be cancelled if the peace in the region was to be sustained, noting that there were many beneficiaries who had not gone on training.

He said the cancellation of the programme would further throw the region into another rounds of militancy which would negatively affect the nation’s already dwindling economy.
