Fulani Herdsmen Hold 8 Hostage In Delta Community

OBIARUKU—APPREHENSION, yesterday, gripped residents of Obiaruku community, Ukwani Local Government Area, Delta State, as eight persons were held hostage for several hours by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Those held hostage, Vanguard gathered, were working in a farmland in the community when they were seized at 6 a.m., by the herdsmen who allegedly brutalised them.

Youth leader of the community, Chika Uwabuofu, told Vanguard that the captives were later released at 1 p.m., as tension was building in the community.

He disclosed that the herdsmen had told their victims that the reason they were held hostage and manhandled was that four of their cows were killed and butchered in the neighbourhood.

Speaking further, he said: “For some time now, Fulani herdsmen have been harassing our men and women in their farms, eating the food in their barns and using their cows to destroy their crops.

“On account of this, we have been reporting their activities to the police and a meeting was held by the council chairman, some top government functionaries and the state chairman of the Fulani herdsmen where they were given three days to leave the community.”

'I am not planning to kill Adams Oshiomhole' - Edo deputy governor

Deputy Governor of Edo State, Pius Odubu, has refuted rumours that he is planning to kill his boss and governor of the state, Adams Oshiomole. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Odubu said the rumor which is being peddled by his political enemies, is aimed at destroying the cordial relationship between him and Oshiomole.

“As a devout Catholic, I will not do anything that is unbecoming of a true Christian in the name of politics. God knows that I never had any pact with any witch/native doctor to kill anyone or avenge for me and I will never condescend to that extent as long as God lives. It is against my faith. The Bible teaches that even when the innocent suffers and mischief makers and traducers appear to triumph in their blackmail, it is for God alone to avenge. I will, by the special grace of God, continue to disappoint the dubious expectations of those who are bent on driving a wedge between me and the governor. It is my nature and character to be loyal to those who God has set over me because they are His instruments. At times like this, blackmailers are at their best but I have decided to take solace in God who knows the hearts of men, trusting and believing as always that God will vindicate the just. I wish to reiterate that I have no rift with the governor, who I revere and deeply appreciate.”the statement read

Burundi General & Wife shot dead

A group of heavily armed attackers ambushed and killed Burundi general Athanase Kararuza while he was dropping his daughter at school in Bujumbara. The assassinated General was also a security advisor to Burundi's vice-president.

The Gunmen fired at General Athanase Kararuza’s car, killing him and his wife instantly. Their daughter survived the ambush but was injured and rushed to the hospital.
More than 400 people have been killed in unrest since President Pierre Nkurunziza said he would run for a third term last April and a string of high-ranking army officials have been targeted during the conflict. Security forces have also been accused by Amnesty Officials of killing opponents and dumping them in mass graves.

Shortly after the attack, the International Criminal court announced that it was starting a preliminary investigation into the violence in Burundi. This will decide whether a full-blown investigation will take place, which could result in charges against those accused of being behind the violence.

Photos: DSS arraigns two men for cloning Gov. Ambode's phone number

Read the press statement below...
The Department of State Security (DSS) on Wednesday arraigned two artisans before an Isolo Magistrate Court for allegedly cloning the mobile line of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. The suspects - Rilwanu Jamiu and Balogun Stanley Oyewole who claimed to be a cocoa dealer, were said to have attempted to perfect a N50 million transfer with the said mobile line.

Prosecuting counsel from the DSS, Mr. Peter Okerinmodun told Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo that the suspects were arrested after using the cloned mobile line of the Governor to send a text message to the Accountant General of the State requesting for transfer of N50 million. He said the suspects conspired with others now at large to commit the crime on February 10, 2016 at about 10:02hours.

Count one reads: "That you Rilwanu Jamiu (M) of No 10, Giwa Street, Oka Akoko Street, Lagos and Balogun Stanley Oyewole (M) of No 65, Unity Street, Ikotun, Lagos and others at large on 10th February, 2016 about 1002hours at Lagos within Lagos Magisterial District, conspired to commit felony to wit: obtaining by false pretence and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 312 (2) and (3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State."

Count two reads: "That you Rilwanu Jamiu, Balogun Stanley Oyewole of the above addresses, and others at large, on above date, time and place fraudulently cloned the Glo line of His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, with intent to induce him by false pretence and used the Glo line to send a text message for the transfer of a sum of fifty million Naira (N50m) and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 312 (2) and (3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State."

After the charges were read to the accused persons, they pleaded not guilty, while the prosecutor asked that they should be kept in protective custody pending the outcome of the legal advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) in view of the fact that their lives could be endangered by other suspects who are on the run.

But Magistrate Adedayo overruled Okerinmodun, saying the DSS ought to have kept them in custody judging by the fact that their lives could be in danger. She said since the offence for which the accused persons were charged to court was bailable and the fact that the Magistrate Court is a court of summary trial, she was inclined to grant bail to the accused persons. She, therefore, admitted them to bail in the sum of N1 million each and two sureties in like sum. Magistrate Adedayo ruled that one of the sureties must be a religious or community leader within the jurisdiction of the court, and that the accused persons must provide five years tax clearance certificates.

She further ordered the accused persons to be remanded in Kirikiri Prison pending the perfection of the conditions attached to their bail, and adjourned the matter to May 10, 2016.

We Bought Only 36 Cars, Not 108 — Nigerian Senators

THE Senate disclosed, yesterday, that senators unanimously rejected the proposed loan to purchase their vehicles, saying none of the 109 lawmakers was interested in it.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja yesterday, Chairman, Senate Committee on Senate Services, Senator Ibrahim Gobir, said the upper chamber never spent over N4 billion to purchase 108 cars for lawmakers.

According to him, only 36 SUVs were bought at the cost of N36.5 million each.

He said: “We had a close session and they agreed that we should give one car per state; we sat down and agreed on who among the three senators from each state needs the car most and that was what happened.”

Gobir, who wondered why Nigerians would kick against the purchase of new exotic cars, said as senators they were entitled to official cars.

Dasuki loses bid to stop ongoing trial

The Federal High Court, Abuja has dismissed an application by embattled former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, to stop his trial in the $2.1 billion arms deal fraud. Delivering judgement in the suit filed by Dasuki against the Federal government today April 19th, the presiding judge, Justice Ademola Adebiyi, ruled that Dasuki's trial must continue.

The judge said Dasuki had not followed the proper process of filing a contempt charge against the federal government. According to Justice Adebiyi, it was out of place for a defendant in a suit to ask that charges against him be dropped for unweighty reasons.

He therefore dismissed the former NSA’s application to stop his trial. Dasuki had filed the application to stop his trial on the grounds that the federal government lacked moral and legal rights to continue his trial after it had disobeyed order of bail granted him since Nov 3rd 2015.

Meanwhile, an Abuja High Court has fixed May 3rd for Dasuki's trial on charges of diverting funds meant for the purchase of arms for soldiers fighting Boko Haram.

Lagos state government planning to build 4th Mainland Bridge

Read the press statement below...
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday said the State Government will formally sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with investors for the construction of the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge before the end of May 2016. The Governor, who spoke at the First Quarter 2016 Town Hall Meeting, the third in the series, held at the Ikorodu Town Hall, Ikorodu, assured residents that once the MoU is signed, work would begin on the 4th Mainland Bridge, which according to him, would go a long way to boost the economy of Lagos East Senatorial District.
He said, “Many investors have shown interest in the actualization of our dream for the 4th Mainland Bridge which will run from Ajah to Ikorodu to Isawo and berth at Ojodu, Ikeja back to the Ibadan expressway. By the grace of God, we will sign an MoU and commence action before May 29”.

He said investors have equally shown interest in the redevelopment of the fish market to an international Fish Market and the redevelopment of inner roads in Epe and Ibeju-Lekki. Governor Ambode said the intention of his administration is to ensure that no part of the state is left undeveloped, expressing optimism that the Lagos East Senatorial District which used to be the economic hub of the state in the then Western Region will regain its position.

“Over the years, the economic activities have continually dwindled resulting in urban migration, underdevelopment and unemployment. It is with a view of revitalizing the economic activities of this zone that Government has identified the need for urgent intervention. “To this end, Government will be relocating the Mile 12 Market to Imota. Work on this will commence next week. Our vision is to make the East Senatorial Zone economically viable and liveable”, he said.

Responding to complaints on the menace of motorcycles, otherwise known as Okada in the State, Governor Ambode asked the people whether they would support a total ban on such mode of transportation in this age and time and in a city like Lagos, a question which was answered in the affirmative by majority of the stakeholders in the hall who raised their hands in support.

The Governor said: “I’m encouraged by this very transparent, credible, free and fair affirmation which I just got from the people. From the response, many of the people in this hall are in support of a total ban on Okada and since this is a government of the people, all the security agencies in Lagos including the Police, Task Force, LASTMA and others, to start with, are hereby directed to fully enforce the ban on Okada between Mile 12 and Ikorodu. “We will not tolerate Okada on the road and I hereby emphasize that there is no more Okada on Mile 12-Ikorodu Road.

Anyone caught flouting this directive will have their Okada impounded and we would prosecute such people as well before the court,” the Governor said. Speaking on the need for the youths in the state to key into the programmes lined up for them by his administration, Governor Ambode urged street urchins and youths involved in social vices such as cultism to lay down their arms assuring that they would be empowered to be gainfully and productively engaged.

He said the plan of his administration is that youths, artisans and entrepreneurs in each of the Senatorial districts and divisions in the State would be able to access at least N1billon between now and June, and use same for their greater economic prosperity, and by extension that of the State. Governor Ambode, who also responded to pleas by residents in Ikorodu on the need for the expansion and rehabilitation of the road network, assured that government will explore the Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative to transform the Ikorodu-Imota-Agbowa-Itokin-Epe Road into a standard 8-lane Road.

He also directed the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources as well as the State Electricity Board to look at the possibilities of providing electricity for Igbo-Olomu community, a suburb in Ikorodu, which has been without light for over 10 years. Highlighting some of his administration’s strides in the last quarter, Governor Ambode said the State achieved major breakthrough in security, saying that since the launch of the N4.78 billion equipment, the state had won several battles against crime.

He said the quick response in the rescue of the kidnapped girls in Ikorodu and the quelling of the Mile 12 riot were testimonies of the effectiveness of the security system in Lagos. The Governor added that many criminals had so far been arrested since the launch of the security equipment, saying that he was ready to pay for information given that would lead to the arrest of hardened criminals.

“I am ready to pay monetary compensation for information on hardened criminals as we proceed to make Lagos crime-free. We are happy to report that crime rate has also reduced in the last three months,” he said. Governor Ambode also used the occasion to appeal to residents to continue to pay their taxes, take ownership of projects in their domain and support the government to achieve the policies and programmes aimed at ensuring a safe and prosperous Lagos.

I Won Kogi Governorship Election – Wada

Ex-Gov. Idris Wada of Kogi on Wednesday told the State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja that he won the 2015 governorship election in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the former governor contested the election on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Wada spoke through one of his witnesses, Mr Joe Agada, the PDP Chief Agent at INEC collation centre in Lokoja, while opening his defence. The witness was led in evidence by Mr Chris Uche (SAN), counsel to Wada.
Agada said Wada he won the election with 204, 877 votes against 6,885 scored by Gov. Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said Bello could not inherit vote scored by late Audu Abubakar, who was until his death, the governorship candidate of APC in the election.
Agada said late Audu scored 240, 867 on Nov. 21 governorship election but died 7.45 a.m. on Nov. 22, 2015 before the election could be concluded.
The witness further stated that the APC had no valid candidate for the supplementary election because at the time Bello was substituted, the statutory time allowed for substitution had elapsed.
Wada scored 199, 514 on Nov. 2, 2015 election, while he polled 5,363 in the supplementary election on Dec. 5, 2015.
In the Nov. 21, late Audu scored 240, 867, while Bello who substituted him received 6,885 vote in the Dec. 5 election.
Agada said that with the figure polled by Bello, he could not be said to have won the election.
The witness, under cross examination, also maintained that the vote cast for late Abubakar Audu remained void after he died.
Agada further argued that Bello did not participate in the Nov. 21 governorship election as he had no permanent voter card.
According to him, none of the candidates won at the time the election was declared inconclusive by INEC.
Meanwhile, the tribunal admitted as exhibits, Agada’s statement on oath, result sheets from the 2,548 polling units in the state, voter register and PDP’s protest letter to INEC.
Other documents admitted by the tribunal were the witness’s party membership card, voter card and letter of his appointment as PDP chief agent at INEC coalition centre.
Another witness, Mr Samuel Oduntan, testified that he carried out a forensic analysis of the election material and discovered that there was over voting.
He, however, said that he could not remember the numbers of ballot papers he scanned, adding that he was the team leader of the forensic expert, who signed report presented to the court.

Photos: Teenage girl killed by train while posing for a selfie

A teenage girl has died after she was hit by a train as she posed for a selfie just inches from a railway track. Horror photos show the unnamed 19-year-old just seconds before the train hit her after ignoring warnings from other tourists to move back. This happened in the city of Foshan, South China’s Guangdong Province last Saturday.

The girl was reportedly attracted to a particular stretch of rail by a sea of roses growing nearby, which also attracted hundreds of others but she went too far by straying too close to the railway tracks until she was finally struck by a freight train and paramedics on arrival pronounced her dead.
Officials have banned people from taking photographs in that railway area.

While selfies may never be listed as an official cause of death, there have been an increasing number of selfie-related deaths in China in recent years, including those of victims who tried to take selfies while on top dangerous cliffs and waterfalls.

NYSC DG explains why March allowance has not been paid

The Director General of NYSC, Brig Gen Olawumi this morning released a statement explaining why the March allowance to Youth Corps members have not been paid. Read his statement below
My dear Corps members, l sincerely regret the late payment of your March allowance. For avoidance of doubt, your allowances do not come to the NYSC as the scheme has no account. Once it is approved by the Federal Ministry of Finance, it goes to the Central Bank account from where it is disbursed directly to Corps members account.
It is the beauty of the Treasury Single Account and that explains why you get the whole allowance in full without any charges.
As at now, we are liaising vigorously with the Ministry so that fund is released to the CBN GIFMIS account and once it is done, it takes us just minutes through the online platform to remit straight to all the 244,532 Corps members in service. We are equally mounting pressure on the Ministry to ensure that the April allowance for 2015 Batch A and the outstanding one month allowance for Stream 2, Batch A 2015 is also paid as quickly as possible. It has become necessary to explain this so as to clear the erroneous believe that the Scheme is holding Corps members allowance. Please just exercise patience as this will be resolved in a couple of days. God bless you my children!
